The monthly meeting of Soulforce Atlanta will be cancelled next month in order to enable all to attend the Pride forums addressing race relations and racism within the gay community. The Town Hall Meeting will be Tuesday, May 2nd, 7 – 8:30 pm at the Central Library, 0ne Margaret Mitchell Square, Atlanta, GA 30303 (MARTA accessible). Admission is free.
This issue is vital to the work and philosophy of Soulforce Atlanta, which is an anti-racist movement, and we encourage dialogue around this egregious issue in Atlanta, especially within LGBT communities. If you haven't attended a political meeting in a long time, I am asking you to please attend this one! Why? Because the gay community suffers from a myriad of artificial divisions now at a time when our unity and solidarity may well be our only hope of achieving legal equality and criminalizing violence and discrimination against us. Why? Because pretty, white gay males dominate the "scene" as an advertising niche`, and yet do not represent the majority of us at home getting ready for work tomorrow, or tending to the needs of our families. Why? Because anti-racism is a deliberate, proactive choice for us to examine the legacy of racial segregation as it remains entrenched in the LGBT and greater Metro Atlanta community. Soulforce goes primarily to listen and support our community in exploring what can be done to effect peaceful and just changes. Why? Because, as A. Powell Davies said, the walls that separate and divide us are strange and foolish; we must openly confront them in order to bring harmony and unity to our diverse communities.
