Default Safe Sex is Hot Sex

Ok boys....listen up: here's a public service announcement made by Chi Chi Larue (he makes gay porn, ok?!) on the the rise in bareback movies as well as the alarming rise in HIV infection among young men and the need for wearing a condom when having anal intercourse.

This is important stuff. Let's not pretend we haven't watched a gay porn movie, ok? Let's not stick our heads in the sand (or up our asses) and pretend we're above it all because we're more spiritual.

No matter what you may think about porn, this is something you need to watch (don't worry you won't see anything untoward or haven't seen before).

Click and learn!

and...

www.safesexishotsex.com

Now. I'm sure we could have a lucid and interesting discussion about porn and what it means for Gay Christians. In fact- have we had that discussion yet? I'm not sure about that. The cynics (none here I hope) will point out that Mr. Larue is simply making this little film to make a little money. Oh.....how short sighted that view is.

Regardless of the various opinions about porn: my posting this info is out of concern for the 19 - 24 questioning guy who doesn't know squat about protecting himself from his partner and is vulnerable to being harmed. It happens every day. We all hear the stories. And it has to stop.

We have to make it stop.

Now.

Hey Daniel,
Ya know what safe sex for redneck dykes is? Making sure that you have a strong enough plastic spoon so it won't break in the pint of ice cream!

I had the same thought. Isn't it interesting how a whole other personality comes out when a man is in drag? And great drag at that!

Magical!

Damn. I'm at an airport (very public) and couldn't open Daniels links.

Daniel,

Thank you for posting this. My brother died of AID's back in the mid 80's. It's a horrible disease. You are right, there is a whole generation coming up who may not be as cognizant as they should.

Question

Um, maybe a stupid question, but what the heck. Since there are risks that a condom could break, would it be possible to wear two, for an extra layer of protection? I personally don't see what would be wrong with that.

I know men who do. This was talked a lot about during the 80's, when people were really freaked out about AIDS. And it should be noted, that condoms - in some cases- have gotten thinner and stronger- depending on the brand.

I would check with GMHC for the latest advice as to the particulars. As they say, knowledge really is everything.

Now- all this aside- the issue with wearing two is that it can diminish sensation.

They told us in health class NEVER wear two because it causes more friction and increases the likelihood of breakage. I don't have stats or research on that, however, so....a healthy helping of salt?

You are right. I checked. Here's the latest stats....

Condom Use and Tips

The vast majority of condom failure results not from manufacturer defects, but improper use. Even if you consider yourself an experienced pro, check out the tips below. You might just learn a thing or two.

As with any useful information, share what you know with your buddies.

The following information applies to 'traditional' condoms rolled down over your penis. For instructions on using the Reality internal condom for butt sex, go here (link pending) .

1. Abide by the Boyscout Motto...
Be prepared! Keep condoms and lube handy, readily available wherever you might be lucky enough to need them, and in good supply. Condoms should be stored some place cool, dry, out of direct sunlight, and not under pressure (like your wallet or back pocket). Condoms have a limited life span, so be sure to check the expiration date, stamped on all individual condom wrappers or the box in which they were packaged for sale.

2. Like Many Men, Condoms are Strong, But Also Delicate
Tear along one side of the package to open, being sure not to rip the condom inside. Also be mindful of fingernails, jewelry, body piercings or other sharp edges that could damage the condom. Pay close attention to which way it unrolls. Trying to force it to unroll the wrong way can weaken it and make it unreliable, in addition to giving your sex partners the impression you are a sexual klutz.

3. Faster Than Most Muni Buses
The average male ejaculates at approximately 28 miles per hour. That's right, faster than an average MUNI bus! When and if that semen comes out, it needs a place to go. If it hits an air pocket, it could easily blow a hole right through the end of the condom.

To prevent this, be sure there is no air trapped in the condom before rolling it on to the penis. Do this by pinching the end with your fingers, which also leaves space for semen to collect.

4. Get Ready, Get Set,...Avoid False Starts
Using your other hand, roll the condom all the way down to the base after the penis becomes fully erect. Be careful not to get any pre-cum (fluid released from the penis during the early stages of an erection) on the outside of the condom. Pre-cum can provide a route of transmission for some sexually transmitted infections.

While rolling it down, push any pubic hair out of the way, lest you risk snagging. This can be painful, killing one's boner, and requiring you to start again with step #2 above.

5. Know Thy Lube
For latex condoms, use only water-based or silicone-based lubricants. Silicone-based lubes feel similar to their oil-based counterparts, but do not have the same destructive effect on latex. In particular, do not use baby oil, Crisco, cooking oil, Vaseline or other petroleum-based products with latex condoms. If your sex play involves food, avoid edible indulgences with oily ingredients such as peanut butter and chocolate syrup.

Keep in mind that some companies will market and sell a variety of different lubes in packaging that looks nearly identical. Be a good consumer, do your homework, and know what you are using. For example, some petroleum-based lubes are great for beating off but at the same time are like Kryptonite to condoms.

6. The 20 Minute Rule
Just as condoms expire, they are also only meant to last for 20 minutes of rigorous use. For extended play sessions, make sure you take a quick break and begin again with a fresh condom to maximize protection for both you and your partner.

This is especially important information for guys using crystal meth during sex, if you consider the following formula:
[tweaking + sex] = [losing track of time] = [marathon recreation] = [tendency not to take needed breaks] = [What were we talking about, again??]
Use a digital timer if you need to, or if porn is part of your background ambience, remember the average scene in a porn movie lasts about 20 minutes... whatever external cues it takes to introduce that reminder.

7. No Recycling
Use each condom only once. If the condom slips off during sex, do not put it back on. Begin again with a new one. If ejaculation occurs, hold on to the base of the condom and pull out while still erect. Carefully remove the condom so as not to allow semen to enter your partner's body.

When playing in groups, use only condom per partner. In other words, the same condom should never be inside more than one person getting fucked. Same goes for condoms on sex toys.

8. The Days of Double Bagging Are Over
At one time in the early days of safer sex, we used to recommend 'double bagging' -- wearing one condom over another condom for additional protection. We have since learned this is actually more risky, as it creates friction between the two condoms and they are more likely to both break.

9. Clean As You Go
Be sure to dispose of them properly. Tie the end into a knot and toss it in the garbage. Do not flush condoms down the toilet, as they can clog pipes and other plumbing.
Why didn't I know this?

Well....I've been with the same man for a long time and we don't use them. Nuff said.

Default I'm appalled

Don't you know that the only safe sex, according to our reigning government gurus who determine funding for safe sex programs, is NO sex. "Abstinence only" is the only way to ensure that you will be safe - unloved, perennially bad-tempered, easily swayed into harmful behavior due to overconcentration on things like foot-tapping, even having a wide stance in the john, maybe - but you'll be safe.

Actually, that kind of protection is more widely applicable to living safely. If we don't encourage social intercourse at all, we wouldn't have any violence. Everyone should have their own private places, complete with high walls and plastic bubble enclosures. Work should be performed in the safety of our own hermetically sealed home offices to minimize cross-contamination with other dangerous organic units.

If we did that, we would all be completely safe. We would also have great fun making balloon creatures for ourselves out of all those rubbers we wouldn't need for anything else.

Okay, I feel better. Had to rant - had a conversation today with someone who had been denied funding for a healthy sex program because they actually wanted to talk about sex.

Thanks guys! Yikes, Andrew! That subject may make an interesting play, or novel. Or short comedy sketch...

Thanks Daniel! I did check the site you linked to earlier, but the search function brought up funny errors. I bow down to your google-fu.
