The sad reality is that many who call themselves 'Christians' are the most homophobic, transphobic, and racist individuals that you could ever meet. Many are more interested in maintaining their way of life than witness Jesus' love and salvation to a precious soul, regardless of who they. Either Jesus died for everybody or He died for nobody.

If "family values" were so important, more people need to assess what's important in life. Mammon seems to more important in some quarters than bulilding strong families. People are dying and suffering all over the world. If their energy was channeled to love, justice and equality there would be a marked difference in society.

While I agree and have experienced that many are, we do need to not forget that there are also those who aren't. I think a comment I made in the general discussion board about generalizing groups but remembering that each of the individuals in the group is unique would be an important point to make now. No need in molding yourself to become angry everytime the word Christian comes up ^_^... that's something I did at one point but have learned to do less.

That being said, I still agree the article is very said. You guys still have plenty of good points and there's still much that we can do in the world. I definitely agree with you Gennee about love, justice, and equality and how it would mark a radical change in our society's perspective on the world.

I am new to this Web site and have been looking through all the forums so I am a bit late responding to this article. As one who used to be one of those Christians who condemned homosexuality as a sin, it was very eye-opening to the way many followers of Christ have hurt their brothers and sisters who happen to be homosexual. I am now in a wonderful lesbian relationship and I find myself dealing with the same feelings those individuals described in the story. I have not fully "come out" yet, and reading this really made me scared to do so because there is still so much oppression.

I did not start writing this to say that though. I wanted to say that the "Christian" community really does believe that homosexuality is a grave sin, and being near/around "sin" exposes them to evil. So, they choose to make their environments reflect what they think is pleasing to God -- or strive to. We can not fault them for that. For example, I can not stand smoking, and I do not associate with smokers as I believe my physical environment is affected by someone who smokes because they wreak smoke everywhere they go. For me, that is not healthy. For many followers of Christ, it is just not a healthy environment for them to be around someone they consider to be deep in sin. Especially if they are very overt with their homosexuality. I realize that once I tell all my friends and family, that for many of them (who have grown up in the Church), they will not want to be in my presence too long because they feel I am wreaking sin...and I can't fault them for that. Hopefully they will open their eyes and see how happy I am and that God is much bigger than the little "rules" of the Bible.
