Default Should we ever achieve our goals.....

is there a time that Soulforce, would, of necessity, become obsolete?

We are indeed seeing more acceptance of lgbt people in our communities, in employment, housing, etc. and many of us attend churches that are welcoming, if not open and affirming. Is there a time in the future in which organizations like Soulforce will not be necessary?

I hope so. Though I don't know what I'll do with all the time. Might have to take up needlepoint.

Or maybe we could just have a social group of Soulforce Veterans, sit around and talk about the bad ol' days.

i don't think so. There may come a time when Soulforce's mission appears to be achieved, but then other generations will follow. If known human history is a reliable indicator, moral/ethical issues are rarely (if ever) resolved once and for all. They come up again & again, in one form or another, and the need to grapple with oppressive power rises over and over.

However, the matter of faith for me is that someday humans will reach a point where the collective best in us reigns, with God's help. That is (more or less) what is in my mind/heart when i say the phrase "Your kingdom come" in the Lord's prayer.

Pax,

My vote says that, if by magic, we really did achieve all our goals, there would still be work to be done to make the world a better place. Maybe it's fluffy clouds and unicorns for queer folks, but there'd still be racism to be dealt with, or sexism, or maybe even xenophobia of a new sort. Soulforce itself? It could either fade and let new organizations rise, or else broaden its goals and continue the good fight.

I would certainly hope that Soulforce would become obsolete, but reality says that even after slavery was technically over, the KKK was created as a result and another hundred years of oppression and prejudice. It reappeared in the 40's, 50's, and 60's as Jim Crow laws and the abhorrent treatment black people got and still get today. History repeats itself. Soulforce will always be needed to keep people free everywhere.

Ohhh, you wanted *real* answers?

Yes, history does seem to move in cycles. So while I'd hope we wouldn't need groups like this, we may always. Well, keep us from getting bored and taking up needlepoint.

I could think of something else to do with those needles with George Bush, and his cronies. I just came from New Orleans, hmmm, Marie LeVeaux, anyone.....

Default Another view

I could see Soulforce surviving, perhaps morphing missions and objectives to coincide with the issues of the day. I don't think there will ever be a time when the struggle for acceptance and love will be completely unnecessary, especially as long as organized religion also survives.

Even if Soulforce eventually closes shop, hopefully all of us will find a way to 'stick together'!!

Default It's been a good thing for me

I am so glad I found Soulforce when I did. I can't imagine it not being here.
There will be a need to bridge the gap for many years.

Post There will be other battles

Soulforce may achieve its goals, but there will be other battles to fight. There are some countries that LGBT is still a dirty word. There will be many people to educate, encourage, love, and guide.
