The Massachusetts Senate today (7/16) passed a bill that would repeal a 1913 state law that prevents gay and lesbian couples from most other states from marrying in Massachusetts.
![]() The bill, which had the support of Senate President Therese Murray, passed with no objections on a voice vote. Proponents of the repeal called the 1913 law archaic and discriminatory. ![]() Apparently, knowing that the state of California has now allowed an end run around their until now exclusive franchise, the senate decided to end this foolishness. ![]() --------(There is no word as yet that the house is considering any similar measure, and governor Mitt Romney is unlikely to be a willing recipient of such a measure.)--------(Oops, Sorry) NOTE: O.K., So the governor is now Deval Patrick, a Democrat. I would guess that this issue is pretty much down hill from here. ![]() However, the senate did pass the bill with a veto proof margin, and if the house does likewise, the governor will certainly sign it. . . . . . . . ![]() If nothing else, if the measure is passed into law, it may save East coasters a lot of wear and tear on their frequent flier miles. ![]() See Entry #7, below Peace, Love, and political smilies, Bruce Chris

It seems that California and Massachusetts have been in lock step on a lot of issues. It was shocked that my state (New York) passed a measure for marriage
. Now it has to pass throught the state senate. California has really goten the ball rolling.Gennee

I am so glad to hear this; I am a bit behind schedule with this; haven't paid much attention to any form of media recently. When my partner and I inquired about a marriage license in Mass. four years ago, some of the clerks in the state would get quite creative to get out of staters a license; we were simply asked, "Do you plan on moving to Massachusetts in the next six months?" and if you answered "yes", (hint hint) then they could grant the license; but of course, once the powers that be got wind of that, clerks were threatened with reprimands for doing so.
Progress IS happening.....

Not a huge surprise here; they passed similar legislature around this time last year, I believe.

I had heard this was going through the MA legislature, and I also hear the governor is in favor of getting this passed. So, unless there is some glitch in the house, it should fly through every level here on out. Congrats Massachusetts!!!

And the governor says he will sign.
This will make it a much shorter drive for Keltic P&L, BC

RI??? what's that got to do with anything? and how does my honeymoon in PTown play into this story? I intend to spend 6 glorious days and nights locked in conjugal bliss. I'm not even sure why we're travelling, we won't be seeing much except the ceiling of our room.

Hey, Mass. is WAY closer to Mich, well than CA, anyhow. You think I could talk Ellie into going there to "tie the knot"? I joke that I will have to marry her in each state seperately as it becomes legal. Then, when we vacation, we can get married and honeymoon at the same time. I think the kids would get a hellava kick out of it!
