Default Newspaper article about visit to Mississippi College

Thought y'all might like to read this.. it was in our paper Tuesday...

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pb...#pluckcomments

I made a couple comments (I'm ms31489). Read through some of the comments... Some are very disheartening, others encouraging, but... I'm glad they're talking. I'm glad that its getting people to think about things that have happened, and are still taking place here..

There's another student that commented on that article, saying that they're 'probably one of the most liberal students on this campus' but... they've also commented on past news articles, one saying that she has a kid, so she's definitely not a residential student. Commuter students are pretty out of the loop with a lot of on-campus happenings... so... she doesn't know what she's talking about hah.. She said she's never witnessed any PDA- homosexual or heterosexual- on campus and that the administration would not tolerate it no matter the couple....

I don't know what campus she's on, but its not this one- theres PDA all the frickin time. Walk into the cafeteria, across the Quad at night, or go past some of doors to the dorms at night- its not uncommon to see people hugging, holding hands (GASP!), or making out, haha.

anywho.. I'm going to stop ranting now.. Check out the article.

MCstudent,

I like that you spoke out and stood up for LGBT people at MC in the comments section. Good job. Keep it up. LGBT students at MC need to hear from someone with a progressive view on LGBT equality.

Rick

I'm glad you posted a comment. Unfortunately, I think what needs to be done with the police harassing the Soulforce bus is to make sure there is a camara rolling and when the cops pull them over, they need to get it all recorded. Then they need to send it to the ACLU and let them see to it.

I am sure not all Mississippians are like that, uptight and homophobic, but the south is well known for its bigotry and general backwards mentality. How long did it take them to see blacks as equal? Some places in the south is still covertly segregated.

No, in fact there are those of us who do in fact believe in social justice and equality... I've been raised here and have lived here all my life- can't wait to leave! But all the same... not all of us are close minded.

I am glad that society is changing down there. I hope you didn't think that I meant everyone was a bigot. I guess I have a stereotype of the South! My coworker is from Habor Springs, Arkansas and she says that you don't want to be gay there. She took a friend there, who is flammingly gay, and they really treated him poorly. She had been gone from there for about 20 years and had left as a child. She didn't realize that things were still like that there.

I hope that your view of equality will spread there. I guess I can't say to much, I am from here in Michigan and we are not to much the better. We can't be bothered to even pass a law to protect gay people from getting fired for being gay!
