You from me on,
lived with me in mind,
and outgrew so much you wanted,
for my needs, then my wants,
then my anxious empty nest you accepted graciously.

You were too quiet,
too kind to tell me
all I don't know to thank you for,
and still stay pleased
with the nothing real I can repay.

I love you as I am supposed to,
and I am as grateful as for the ground.
My mother, who made up for Father,
You are why words fail
and deserve what you feel unworthy of,
but what is not mine to give.

I was you, who taught me to surpass you.
It cannot be, and yet it is done,
only because you allowed me to happen.
Even never living up to you,
Thank you is all I can always do...
