Default Where are the balloons?

With all the serious stuff going on, we didn't notice as a certain poster passed a milestone number mark. Guess I really do talk a lot.

Shouldn't there be balloons celebrating the occasion?

I don't have any balloons to give you. But I have some leftover Halloween candy. Will that do?

It's candy corn.

Not a fan of candy corn, and a recent presentation at my school made me wonder about balloons.

They took a red balloon, and it made me happy, I wished there were 98 more. Then they got into the whole relativist debate over the color of the balloon. The balloon is always red, whether you believe it or not, but some things aren't that simple.

That's what I like about this place. It's not always black and white. Sometimes a red balloon floating in the summer sky is something much more, and other times it's just a pretty balloon that was separated from a happy child.

Happy 5000 Zerbie.

Unmasked, You are a very deep thinker. When I see a red balloon, all I see is a red balloon. No matter how long I ponder it, it's still a red balloon.

When you say that things are not that simple, I have no idea what you mean. But then again, I'm not a deep thinker. My thinking stays pretty much on the surface.

A red balloon is a red balloon, but I was using it as an illustration for moral relativism. There is a belief in extreme absolutism in the Church of Christ, things are always right or always wrong, but they don't hold to it. Murder is always wrong, but is all killing murder? Is it murder to kill a man in war? Is it murder to end a suffering man's life as an act of kindness (if that's wrong, then why is it okay to euthanize our pets)? Why is it okay to kill an animal purely for sport?

When is a balloon just a child's toy instead of a tool to poison the minds of young people. When does it bring joy, and when does it kill? Truth is true whether you believe it or not, but when you live in the grey area, it's both and neither(black/white) at the same time.

Well, it makes me think of "The Red Balloon," where the balloon follows the little boy throughout the streets of Paris. The bullies try to steal the balloon, but the little boy tells it to fly away and it does, and only comes back once it's safe. But then at the end, the bullies trick the balloon, they catch it and beat it to death. It deflates (dies.)

Then, every balloon in Paris frees itself from toy shops, from out of other children's hands, and they fly across Paris to the boy whose red balloon was murdered. He picks up all the strings, and the movie ends with the combined force of hundreds of balloons lifting the little boy high into the air and flying over Paris under a bubble of multicolor balloons.

Strange stuff, huh?

Default Zerbie: if you tied one of those baloons to each one of your posts, that would be a

lot of baloons.

And a lot of posts! . . . . . . . .

Peace, Love, and pass me my reading glasses, Bruce Chris

And Unmasked, clearly you are hopeless. No matter how hard you try, you will NEVER make a proper Fundie

Aw, never ever?

I think of the song 99 Red Balloons, which was a Cold War protest song out of Germany.

"This is what we've waited for. This is it boys, this is war." In the song the world was destroyed because the Russians thought that a group of balloons were UFOs, preparing to attack.

It's not a question of whether the balloon is green or red. It's a question of whether the coming apocalypse is really a children's toy. Maybe there are some absolutes, but what happens when we treat something harmless as a threat, or something pure as if it were a deadly plague?

I wonder how many "Christians" ever stop to consider what is at stake if they're wrong about us...

You just wait. That old mean devil down below is sharpening his pitchfork and is going to jab them in their hind ends as soon as they get down there. Then they'll wish they had been nicer to us gays up here on the surface.

So much for changing the subject, eh?

PSA: this thread was intended expressly for silliness. Anyone with more humor than I've got ready to turn it around?

I was just about to mention "99 Red Balloons", actually.

And that's an excellent point. What does happen when we take life too seriously? We lose track of who we are; we lose track of what makes us human to begin with, what binds us as humanity. We might be different. We might even be oppressed. But the one thing that we all share is humor and the need to laugh. Now, if we could only learn to laugh at ourselves instead of at others...

But that's not what this thread's about. Here. Have a smilie-face balloon, Zerbie. As a matter of fact, you can have several!

Congratulations! Here's a nice funny story.

Last June I took part in a gay Pride march in my city. I was holding up one end of a banner, and my buddy Tim, who was holding up the other end, told me that his 6-year-old niece loves Pride events. Why? "Because gay people have balloons!"
