I will definitely think of these tips next time I'm angry about something. When I'm angry, I tend to dwell on it and my whole day is ruined and I hate that I am like that! I also liked the link to the living in the moment tips.

Great post!

#6: Buy a gun.

Just kidding. I'll admit that I have had trouble internalizing anger. I usually end up sleeping it off.

Hey Rick,
Thanks for the link. I have struggled with anger issues all my life. Growing up we were not allowed to show anger. We were never taught to vent properly. All the while, we watched our father get angry over stupid things like losing a game of checkers. He would swipe the board and all the pieces off the table and stomp out of the room. We learned really quick to just let him win. Basically, we learned to placate and pacify him, because he got angry quick and frankly it was frightening. But we never learned the proper way to be angry, and yet not throw a fit or fly into a rage. To this day, when he calls my name (and I am 48) my heart races and I run to him and basically stand at attention. Don't get me wrong, he was the most loving of my two parents, and was a good man, just had a rotten temper, and I inherited it.
I have been to anger management classes because I let anger get the best of me on several occasions. I get mad about stuff I have no control over, and the inability to stand up for myself. I fold quickly and let people run over me. I am a "yes" person and try to appease everyone. That's how I grew up. I learned to try to make everyone but me happy.
I used to fly into a rage over silly things, things I couldn't control. I let my buttons get pushed and I get out of control. Like I said, I went to anger management classes for 8 weeks. And I started taking Zoloft, and so far it works. I still get angry, but I don't escalate and I sleep better and don't have the physical effects like I did before. I used get a neck ache, my stomach would tie up in knots and my chest hurt. I had to do something.
I had to accept the fact that my family will never accept me as a lesbian. I can't change them. I can't change the fact that my ex husband is jackass who doesn't care about his daughters. I quit expecting him to step up to the plate. I can't change my dad's bad temper. I can do something about the temper I have, however.

I do the same thing. Somebody will piss me off and instead of confronting them when it happens, I'll dwell on it and it screws up my day.

Lately I have been avoiding confronting a friend of mine who has pissed me off. This friend is like most people (including me) who get immediately defensive when criticized. Hopefully these tips on anger management will help me confront him in a more constructive way.
