I just found out that after a 54-year run AS THE WORLD TURNS is being canceled! The long-running soap will air its final episode in September 2010.
Now ONE LIFE TO LIVE will be the only New York-based soap. The soaps are dying out. They may all become extinct at some point to make room for cheaper game shows and reality shows. Low ratings and a tough economic climate is cited as the reason why CBS is canceling AS THE WORLD TURNS. |

My mom used to watch the show. I did on occasion. Another old classic bites the dust. We don't need any more reality shows.

Gennee, I agree with you. A gun would have to be held to my head to get me to watch "Dancing with the Stars" or "Survivor."

Too bad about the soaps, eh? When I was in junior high and high school, my sister and I got hooked on Another World. (This would have been during the 1970s). We would watch it during summer and Christmas breaks, and when we were home with the flu. I also remember another long-running soap, The Edge of Night, which came to an end when I was young.
When my sister was in high school, everyone in her English class had to pair up with someone to write and present a radio play. She and her best friend came up with a soap opera parody titled "The Edge of Another World". |

Someone said to me about this, " Blame Reality TV programming."
I said to that person, "Reality shows can’t be blamed for everything. I know that actors blame there being less TV work on reality shows but that’s not why AS THE WORLD TURNS was canceled. AS THE WORLD TURNS sucks! That’s why it was canceled. The writing was not good. It was difficult to follow and get hooked on. AS THE WORLD TURNS’ ratings were in the toilet, just like GUIDING LIGHT’s rating were in the toilet. Also, where was the diversity on AS THE WORLD TURNS as well as GUIDING LIGHT. AS THE WORLD TURNS and GUIDING LIGHT must take some of the blame for the demise of their shows. They lost a lot of their audience. They needed to try to build a new audience. There was a time when women used to stay home with the kids and watch soaps. That era is over. Women work outside of the home now. People don’t stay at home and get into soaps like they use to. Also, the era of daytime soaps being big and popular is over. The networks aren’t going to create and produce anymore new daytime soaps.... See More If AS THE WORLD TURNS would have had good, high rating then it wouldn’t have gotten canceled. If AS THE WORLD TURNS had good, high ratings then advertisers would have been spending money and buying commercial time during the broadcast of AS THE WORLD TURNS." |
