From USA Today:

Very interesting, Rick, and also disturbing.
I think we need to exercise our reason and make a deliberate effort to sort through and analyze the facts. Unfortunately it appears to me that our society values reason less and less every year. We are being pulled under by the propaganda culture in our society and don't really seem to care. It's easy to drift along; it takes effort to reason. I was in a conversation with an elderly couple about health care. The husband and wife went on and on describing all the troubles they had had with health insurances over the years. It was a nightmare scenario they painted. Then they launched into how horrible was the "Obama Health Plan" because it would get rid of all private insurance. They got all their info from right-wing propaganda radio and magazines. They knew intellectually that what they heard there wasn't true, but believed it anyway. It seems no amount of logic can sway us...sigh!

Very good article, Rick. Sad fact is that many people let others speak and think for them rather doing it themselves. An example: Obama is labeled as anti-American and yet George Bush put people in jail for no apparent reason but being suspected of being a terrorist. Most of the people spent three, four and five years in jail without any counsel or unable to see their families. Most were released because they were innocent to begin.
Recently I listened to an internet program where a reporter interview people who supported Sarah Palin. When further questioned about Palin's positions on specific issues and how she would handle them, these folks had no clue on either. I believe LGBT people catch a lot of flak because we go against the lies, falsehoods, and innuendoes society, the institutional church, and legal and medical profeesions have foisted upon the populace. It's not a new practice. Been done for centuries. Gennee

Excellent article. Really scary too. It makes that Supreme Court decision all the more ominous.
I guess it's part of that whole "might makes right" mentality that so many conservatives have. That, in turn, is part of the social-Darwinist philosophy. If you're rich and powerful, it's because you're a superior being who earned it, and that means you're entitled to use that wealth and power as you see fit. |
