Post Is Elton John a Sellout?

According to this article, he's against gay marriage. Not that I'm a gushing fan or anything.

I'd heard something about that too, but he and his husband are certainly enjoying the benefits of their civil union.

more offensive to me is the fact that he performed for Rush Limbaugh's wedding....

Default There was a time

If I am not mistaken, when Elton John wasn't interested in getting hitched to his partner. Then the law changed in England, and he thought differently, even if it isn't call 'marriage'. And even earlier than that, I remember when he came out and his songs weren't played on the airwaves for more than a year, and he just kept on keeping on. All this to say: it seems that Elton does what Elton wants to do and doesn't concern himself with what other people think. And there is something else to consider: many musicians think of themselves as being beyond politics. That could play a factor too. But above and beyond all this, I bet the real reason he played for Limbaugh is that its all about show business, and John's spending habits are legendary.

If you are going to play for a homophobe, at least make him bow and scrap by paying through the nose. Big time.

I'm trying REALLY hard not to make a joke about the fact that you used "blow" and "paying through the nose" in the same sentance.

In any event, I remember the first time he was talking about not understanding the fuss in the US about marriage. And it turns out that, at least at the time, it's because he was clueless about how our system works here. Like, the fact that that word is used for the government thing and the religious thing. So at least on that front, he's more clueless than anything else. (As for how recently he agreed with Rush, and, for that matter, how long Rush has been espousing support for civil unions, I got nothing. I find it suspect that there are no direct quotes and that it's all filtered through Mr. L's perspective though).

As for playing a notorious homophobe's wedding: there's an argument to be made that he's reaching out, trying to build bridges blah blah. I don't buy it, I think he's in it for the money and I think that that's kind of his right. I don't necessarily agree with his choices or admire him as a person, but there it is.

But if you go back and read my post, you'll see that I wrote 'bow and scrape' (I misspelled this last word however, leaving off the 'e'). Which may be relevant to this matter of Elton John: we all see the 'truth' we want to see?
