Exclamation Sojourners' Ever-So-Polite Homophobia

Recently Sojourners folks in DC broadcast an email inviting urgent action to advocate passage of key legislation during the current Lame Duck congress. Four worthy issues were highlighted. DADT was not among them. When I wrote to call them on this omission they pointed to a tepid blog post from September naming their "concern" for the issue. Now that the rubber is screaming down the road to the end of this Congress, we and DADT are invisible in Sojourners' advocacy efforts.

Then, bless their little hearts, Sojourners sent out an apology and update of the Lame Duck email. The correction was because of a software problem that prevented folks' advocacy. They did not take this opportunity to widen the circle and include DADT in the list of issues. What they did, in my perception anyway, was pour a large dose of salt in the wound.

As an openly gay clergy person I'm simply fed up to the eyeteeth with the polite homophobia of liberal churcy types. I urge y'all to visit Sojourners website or their Wall on Facebook and let them know how you feel about being invisible in the circles of good Christian folks who are otherwise quite proactive in their socially progressive advocacy. Let's take this opportunity to hold them accountable for their ever-so-polite homophobia.

Hmmmm. Maybe we really ARE a gentle, angry people?

Peace.
