Default Brothers: Larry and Arthur and The Normal Heart

Larry Kramer has an august history within in the GLBT community. This, an interesting piece from the NYtimes, is an interesting read.

Re Larry's brother, Arthur, coming to terms with Larry being gay:

"The changes didn't happen overnight, like a religious awakening. They happened slowly, almost imperceptibly.

"It was me learning through my activism and growth that being gay wasn't bad, and I wasn't going to let it be bad," Larry said. "And having to convince him and the world it wasn't bad, and him coming around."

What caught me eye were the words 'religious' and 'happened slowly'. Something to think about re Soulforce. Change may not come as fast as we want it too: but it will.

This begs the question: What can we do today to convince each other and someone we love (or not love for that matter) that being gay isn't bad?

Default Time

For my mom & stepdad, it took some time. They are both very supportive.

However, my dad & stepmom are another matter: they are both fundamentalists. They still love me, but believe I can be "changed." My dad accepts a conspiracy theory of his own making, that I'm, according to his understanding, "brainwashed by college and a hippie church." I attend a UCC church, which he visited once, and they are all educated, successful people who do not look like "hippies."

Anyway, time does heal some wounds. I sincerely hope my dad will see that there is nothing wrong with me as God created me "just as I am."
