Former special assistant to President Bush on faith-based issues, David Kuo, writes in a new book that Karl Rove’s office referred to evangelical leaders as “the nuts.” Kuo said, “National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as ‘ridiculous,’ ‘out of control,’ and just plain ‘goofy.’”

I read about that at Pam’s the other day. Apparently they were discussing it on Scarborough.
As much as I enjoy the humiliation of hypocrites (except when it’s me of course ), in this case the religious conservatives, but based on the inconsistency of Bush’s stance on gays, et al, I figured the marriage issue among others was more about power than morals. (<I know, it was a surprise for me too.. ) Even though their political behavior is in essence even MORE depraved (Iraq) than that of the fundamentalists who 'just' support them, the fact that their inconsistency is even more consistent makes it seem fundamentally less depraved. In other words, there’s at least a method to THEIR madness. Like that whole hot and cold and lukewarm thing in the Bible. The power brokers in Washington at least KNOW they’re lying through their teeth. The fundamentalist "Christians" aren’t even aware that they’re lying to themselves. The only difference between their unethical behavior seems to be their awareness of it. Lawrence O’donnell made and interesting point on Scarborough (re Pam) that I have long suspected but not necessarily concluded until now - because of this. “It would be much worse if they paid lip service to these people publicly and privately actually believed what people like Pat Robertson believe.” Like I said, on the face of it it seems even worse because they know the damage they’re doing and don’t care. But technically, they – Rove/Bush/Republicans, may be MORE reachable than the fundamentalists.

I'm glad to see the recognition of true colors. I personally think they've been showing them; I just think that some people are taking off the x-ray glasses now and can see that the emporer is indeed naked. Sad it has taken 6 years.

What I've yet to see in the news coverage is whether David Kuo himself thinks the religious reich are nuts.
I saw him on 60 Minutes last night -- he's bitter that Bush didn't fund the faith-based initiatives to the extent that he hoped. He also admitted that he was one of the ones who wanted to use the initiative to politicize Christianity even further -- so it seems to me that, without the secret disdain within the White House for Christian fascists, Kuo would himself still be one of those nuts. The positive thing in his interview was that Kuo's disillusionment with the Republicans caused him to reevaluate religion's role in politics. He now believes Christianity "should take a fast from politics." It won't happen. James

An interesting (and revealing) footnote: the "goofy" "nuts" are in denial.
