I somehow missed this big frontpage article in the NYTimes, which is delivered to my door every morning. My husband, who happened to be home at lunch said "Did you see the article on the front page about 'Gay Christians'?" "Ah.....no!"
Here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/12/us...=1&oref=slogin Mel White is featured in the piece as well as serveral other gay Christians. Looking at the picture of the two guys that accompanied the piece- this is on the front page mind you- made me laugh out loud. I mean really! How could these two not be gay? Black leather sofa- color coordinated with the carpet and elephants holding up the coffee table- not to mention the nativity tablescape as well as the birdcage in the back! Seriously though, I'm sorry the writer of the piece - Neela Banerjee- interviewed Robert A. J. Gagnon- a self-appointed doorkeeper. I stumbled upon his pompous writings some weeks back (http://www.robgagnon.net/). He loses himself in legalism big time and is a staunch foe of GLBTQ persons. Orthodox with a Capital 'O'. But reports being reporters, do what reporters do in being 'fair and balanced'. In this case not much: of course, one doesn't expect great depth an a 1500 word piece, but one does expect, if one is going to quote someone like Gagnon for there to be another theological-speak person (ie authority) on the other side. It leaves the wrong impression. Overall however, it's nice to see the words Gay and Christian together on the front page. The hard copy has (on page 18) an article about the demise of Rev. Paul Barnes just beneath the remainder of the text.
