Question I have a question

For those of you who don't know, I recently came out on July 4th. It was entertaining... But anyways, ever since then my parents and I have been on odd terms, like walking on egg shells. Last night my mom came to me and we were talking. She and my dad have been tracking my internet progress through the home router, and they discovered this website. I got excited, cause I want them to read it and listen to what people have to say here... but mom got very offended. She focused more on our "negativity towards Dr. James Dobson" then our message. She also thinks Dobson is preaching a ministry of love, and that he isn't degrading to GLBT people at all. Is there anything that I can show her, or read to her that might show her our side/ our perspective?

Ack, I'm sorry to hear that!

A lot of what you see written from GLBT perspectives about Dobson is pretty polemical and angry ... which is kind of understandable given what he says about us, but at the same time is less convincing to neutral people, and certainly unconvincing to someone who actually likes Dobson.

Mel White's more recent book has good information in it about Dobson's ideas, and is presented in fairly restrained language. You may want to excerpt some of that (more likely than convincing your parents to read the whole book, probably). Bruce Bawer's book Stealing Jesus also has a good chapter on Dobson written from a gay perspective, but not focusing only on GLBT issues.

The main problem I can see, though, is that if your Mom is a fan of Dobson, she may be beyond being convinced by most of the critiques of Dobson that are available.

Have her watch this video.

http://www.soulforce.org/article/dear-dr-dobson-video

In it, Jeff Lutes, the exec. director of Soulforce, goes into clear detail about why Dobson's words & actions are unloving and do not resemeble Christ.

I like this resource too: http://www.soulforce.org/article/false-focus-family it's a good point by point reference for the things that Dobson says.
