Default An article on Robertson's comments

I read an article in the Lexington Herald Leader today that I felt did a very good job of condemning the source of Robertson's comments, rather than just the comment itself.

Robertson reflects popular 'end times' anti-Semitism

Default Pat Robertson

Jamie,
Interesting article.. Long before I came out I thought Robertson was not the brightest crayon in the box.
In my class at school we have been talking about terrorism and civil rights and I had them make a chart of various events in American history and how civil rights have been denied because of it. One was Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeus corpus during the Civil War, WW 1 and the Alien and Sedition Acts, WW2 and the Japanese internment camps, and finally the Cold War and Joseph McCarthy. The prevailing theme of each event was that civil rights seem to fly out the window when there is an atmosphere of fear. It struck me how much the LGBT community needs to get out there and educate people about how we live and how much there is no need to fear us, because if we don't, we could be the next example, if not already, of how civil rights go by the wayside because of fear, namely the Christian fundamentalists fear, of which Robertson is the cheerleader.
All this debate about marriage is really nothing more than the fundies saying, "We don't want you to get married, because we don't want to have to face the fact that LGBT people really can be in love, and LGBT people really can have happy, successful, productive lives." And that threatens everything they have preached for years. It has produces fear.
One point this author made was that ultimately this country will not abide the denial of basic civil rights to anyone, it just may take time. My question is-Why does it have to take time? Why does it have to be so hard?

Thumbs up

I believe this is an excellent description of the dispensational / dominion heresy espoused not only by Robertson but most evangelicals. I believe that these doctrines along with the idea of sola scriptura and biblical inerrancy are dangerous elements that are acting like a malignant growth on the Body of Christ.

Robertson is not the only one who believes his outrageous statements. Many evangelicals share the same sentiments. My own mother called me the day of Sharon’s stoke to warn me of its eschatological consequences.

My youth group at church is currently examining this fictional end time scenario in their Sunday School class. I feel it is important to inform the youth about the danger of these profanation teachings so that it will not influence them.

I am grateful that it is a clergy man in my own denomination who has written this article. It lets me know that there is still hope for the Christian Church/ Disciples of Christ.

Default Thanks

Very good article. It helps us to see how Robertson is a "victim" of mis-information. He firmly believes that what he is advocating is God's will. He is not an evil man. He is mis-informed, ignorant, blind to the Truth of love, grace, compassion, etc. Our best approach to him will be one that includes correct information, wisdom and a path of love, grace, compassion, etc. Thank you for that article.

Default not evil?

He may or may not be an evil man, but he IS a dangerous man. Spouting off continued hate over years doesn't show me an ignorance that's willing to learn. It shows me a stubbornness to any other idea or change and it encourages his "followers" to stagnate in their own growth as well. Dangerous stupid little silly man.

Default Pat Robertson's Comments

While I think Pat Robertson's choice of words were very poorly timed, and insinsitive, I'm not so sure I would be ready to label him as anti-semetic. I also believe that Isreal has a right to all of the land that God promised Abraham in Genesis. Does this make me a "Christian zionist" or anti-semetic? I also believe in the Rapture of the church, a seven year tribulation period, and that Jesus will rule from Jerusalem, during His thousand year reign. I do belive that Isreal, and the Jews have a very important part to play in the Great scheme of things. Am I alone here? Don't get me wrong, while I esteem Pat Robertson as a brother in Christ, (although very misinfomed especially in GLBT issues) he is not one of my favorite people. I think that he was wrong for his comments about Chavez and Sharon. In my opinion he has been wrong on several occasions. I guess my question would be though, how about those of us in the GLBT community who share SOME of his theological views? Am I the only one on this forum that does? And if so, is there room for me here? LOL

Have a great day
Joey

Of course there's room for you. Hey if there's room for me, there's more than enough for you......I do enjoy listening to different viewpoints. Besides the Israel land topic, what other views does Robertson have that might make him seem a little more reasonable. I only ask because I can't think of any, but to be fair, I listen or watch him as little as possibl.e

Default Pat Robertson's Comments

NonLemming,
I am not really in the habit of watching the 700 Club either. I happened to be watching on the day he made the comment we are talking about becuase, I was flipping through channels and stopped becuase I heard Ariel Sharon's name being mentioned and it caught my attention. As far as other views that he has that would be more reasonable, hmm.. I don't agree with a lot of his politics, or opinions, but I do share his faith in Christ, and I am also a charismatic. A cousin of mine was actually healed of a heart murmor after Ben Kenchlow (spelling?) had what we charismatics call a word of knowledge that my infant cousin (whom he called by name) was being healed of that specific condition. I also believe that the 700 CLub has two very wonderful ministries, Operation Blessing and the Flying Hospital. So even though I don't agree with a lot of things that he says, I do try to be careful when levying judgement.

That's cool, keep on being careful. I myself have seen enough of him to feel comfortable in calling it as I see it. I guess I just have less in common with him, and while I don't think him to be "evil" by nature, I do find his ignorance to be very dangerous. Doesn't mean we can't pray for him.

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

His words have been evil. I believe he does have evil in his heart, though he thinks it is justified. He callously disregards the impact of his words. His mode is to attack and destroy anything or anyone who doesn't affirm his understanding of God or the Bible. The source of it is fear.

He isn't evil, he is weak. That is very clear.

Update: I just read a news bit yesterday on Yahoo! News that a fellow conservative spoke out against Robertson for his "insensitive" comments.
Perhaps karma is starting to come back & hitting Robertson where it hurts: money & conservative support.
