Marriage bans affect the mainstream community - not just LGBTs!!!!!!!
If we can't make that point, we will probably lose the next battles too. This Ohio thing is a dangerous precedent, and it can also warn other states away from these amendments. That is not the only unintended consequence such an amendment can have on a state. What about seniors who are collecting social security checks after the death of a spouse and living on a fixed income who cohabit with a new partner? They too will face being outside the system under a marriage amendment. In Arizona, our police and firefighters use a domestic partner benefits plan to recruit new hires. NOT gay ones, but straight ones, b/c the job is so stressful there is a high divorce rate, so officers may not want to re-marry, but still want to legally protect their loved ones. We need to get word out to the community as a whole that these marriage bans have a LOT of unintended consequences on the mainstream population, affecting all unmarried couples regardless of sexual orientation. Communicate that fact to the voters and we win. |
