WORCESTER— Larry Cirignano, the former executive director of Catholic Citizenship, was acquitted yesterday on a charge of assaulting a counter-demonstrator at a Dec. 16 anti-gay marriage rally in front of City Hall.
A six-member jury deliberated for about seven hours over two days in Central District Court before finding the 51-year-old Mr. Cirignano not guilty on a charge of assault and battery.
Sarah Loy, 28, of Worcester, one of about 20 counter-demonstrators at the rally, said she was standing near the speakers’ podium with a sign that read “No Discrimination in the Constitution” when Mr. Cirignano approached her from behind and pushed her backward into the crowd, causing her to fall to the pavement. She said she suffered bruises on her elbow and shoulder.
