U.S. Says Pope Immune From Molestation Lawsuit

ROME — The U.S. Justice Department has told a Texas court that a lawsuit accusing Pope Benedict XVI of conspiring to cover up the sexual molestation of three boys by a seminarian should be dismissed because the pontiff enjoys immunity as head of state of the Holy See.

And his John..Paul.

A 1994 lawsuit against Pope John Paul II, also filed in Texas, was dismissed after the U.S. government filed a similar motion.

The lawsuit cites a May 18, 2001, letter from Ratzinger written in Latin to bishops around the world, explaining that "grave" crimes such as the sexual abuse of minors would be handled by his congregation and that the proceedings of special church tribunals handling the cases were subject to "pontifical secret."

The pope's lawyer, Jeffrey Lena, said Tuesday it was "appropriate" the Justice Department had determined the pope was "the sitting head of state of the Holy See."

I feel like the fact that this isn’t even a story, is now the bigger story.

O.K., the sources that you quoted are probably right, Ratzinger probably IS beyond the reach of the law, so maybe what he really needs is lots of publicity. Good luck on making THAT happen.

Well I'll have to do my little part to help make that happen. And that's why I asked the question -- whether this was old news or if I should even bring it up whenever the CC sex scandal is blamed on gays.

Child rape is bad enough, condoning it takes the cake.

It pretty much damns anyone who would focus on same gender attraction as the problem. Such a position condones those who condone child rape.

And it's so much easier to just thrust Ratzinger in the spotlight, as opposed to saying Bishop or Cardinal so and so, who transfered the priest, and so on.
