Smile 2007-Lessons Learned

This time of year, I usually summarize on the highs and lows of the past twelve months. Yes, I achieved most of the goals I set at the beginning of the year. It was a struggle financially but God has seen us through. There were three lessons in particular which sum up my feelings about these issues.

1. I grew much emotionally as a transgender person. As a crossdresser, I am happy and content. I spent much time with gay friends and was so tocuhed by how comfortable they were with their sexuality. It mirrored what I experience as a transgender. My love for gay, lesbian, and bisexual people has bloomed.

2. My attitude about AIDS has changed from indifference to one of concern and involvement. On one occasion, I had the opportunity to encourage someone who lost his partner to AIDS. When I saw people who still grieve over those lost from the disease, I started crying too . Please forgive me for my indifference. I believe that EVERYONE should be involved in eradicating this dreaded disease regardless of religious and political affiliation.

3. At the Transgender Day of Remembrance vigil and ceremony, I graced the presence of nearly 200 of my fellow trans people. There were trans women, trans men, gender queer, FTM, crossdressers, transsexuals, gays, lesbians, and straight folks. Talk about diversity! I had some trepidation about going because I didn't know how I would react to it. I'm glad that I did attend because I believed that it was important.

If I can express 2007, it would be that I found the family I never knew I had. I is my desire to forge friendships in various groups of the GLBTQI community. I will support causes which will improve our lot. In 2008, I will focus on some issues and contribute in some way. I want what is best for all of us.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Gennee
