(I apologize if any of this content might be offensive, and understand full well if this thread gets put into the foyer).

Personally, I'm not buying it, but I do give Shirley some credit for recognizing that no one cared when they were just protesting gay funerals (though I'm not certain about the context in which that came about yet).

I'm still listening to the interview, so I might have more later.

If they want to me martyrs for Christ, they've chosen the wrong guy. Jesus loved those in need, the oppressed and the blind. Let them follow that Christ.

They are suffering the consequences of their own actions. And giving them more attenion is enabling their dysfunction.

Let be real here: the one major factor that has changed the way poeple 'see' gay folks is AIDS.

We don't need Mr. Phelps to help us. We've suffered a great deal without his 'help'.

I'm inclined to agree that, while there isn't a whole lot I can do to keep them quiet, I certainly don't need to be helping them get attention. That said, the linked interview may very well be the first I've seen of Shirley where she comes off as a mostly-normal person. Every other interview ever, she starts getting a little hysterical and reverts to (more) name-calling and shouting of bible verses.

Also, I still can't get past the point of actually believing that these people honestly believe everything that they say. Getting rid of gay people will fix the nation's economy?

I did find it interesting (and it's what made me think of posting it here) that the two did form a shaky kind of friendship.

Shirley Phelps Roper is a puppet trained by her vitriolic father to spew hatred, violence, and stupidity upon the people with which she comes in contact. Hate is addictive, because it intimidates and makes the hater feel power. That is all she is. I have no respect for her or anything for which she stands. I hope Obama or Hillary take office, legalize at least civil unions for gay people, and I hope she and her clan are so outraged and sickened that they move to some homophobic nation that will accept their ideology.

You are right about the part that she and her clan make homophobia look stupid and hateful, but still....I wish she would just be herself and not her father's puppet. Just another example of a little girl who desperately wants her father's approval and will stoop to such measures to get it.

just a note to say that I disabled the link in the original post, but not because of content. It showed up on my virus scan as a possible threat, some kind of "downloader."

I agree with Daniel, if we back this excuse for a church in any way than we seem highly hypocritical. As much as they "help us," I'd rather not thank them.

Actually, as much as I dislike seeing the hate, I kind of agree. The more that Phelps spouts hate and bigotry, the more disgusted people get with it. Allowing people to get turned off by his hatred might give us a real shot at dignity.
