I used to watch wrestling when I was in high school. Had posters of all the guys in my room until my dad questioned me about it and I added one "Miss Elizabeth" poster for cover. Macho Man Randy Savage was my favorite.
I saw that Larry King Live had Vince McMahon and WWE stars on the other night and I stopped and listened for a moment. I had to laugh, though, when (Triple H I believe) was somewhat complaining that newspapers in other countries cover their events in the sports section while U.S. papers report on them only in the entertainment section. I remember one time around 1998 when my life was all tied up with a Southern Baptist church. The guy I had a crush on liked wrestling. So did the youth minister. Once at a retreat we were talking about it and the music minister chimed in and said that a proverb cautions us not to envy a violent man. At the time I thought his argument was silly, but now I don't. It is more than a little disturbing how the crowd reacts at times. And I think it has probably gotten edgier since I used to follow it 15 years ago (the time period of the stars you listed in your poll.) I don't want to really fault wrestling too much, though, since it allowed me to put the moves on other young guys growing up. Oh what a joy to discover socially-accepted homoeroticism (while not knowing what any of that meant, of course). I mean really -- a pile driver is putting their head between your legs and lifting them up by their waist. Don't play too rough though, always let them get out after a brief struggle and make another attempt. In any event, if I had to do it over I'd much rather be authentic and out in high school and college than closeted. Now in my 30's, I like letting my effeminate side out more than butching-it-up all the time. |

... my memories of pro-wrestling go back much further than either of you. Since it's pushing 40 years (well, 35 at least) since I paid attention, the name I remember are:
Killer Kowalsky Mitsu Arakowa Professor Tanaka. Of course, all these date back to when their trunk's waistband was somewhere just underneath their armpits.
