Default Church Within A Church & UMC Conference

Jenna has been increasingly active in the CWAC (Church Within A Church) movement. CWAC is a Methodist movement, much like Methodism was in its beginnings, and is "heeding the Call to BE Church in new ways and model what the United Methodist Church might become." As such, it is not formally part of the UMC, but stands in solidarity with those within the UMC who strive for full inclusion of all people.

The CWAC recently published a book by Gil Caldwell, who is also involved in the direct action, along with Soulforce, during the UMC General Conference this year. In actuality, there are many links between us. Depending on the outcome of the UMC General Conference, which may be very predictable, it may make a statement shortly after that event that will be, I think, very important to many within the Methodist tradition.

Even though it recently celebrated the 5th anniversary of its first church start, it is still a fledgling movement. It is in need of support - prayer, presence, time and funding. Activism takes resources - spiritual, physical and material - and the movement is in need at this time. If it isn't breaking rules, I would like to include a note sent by Jenna to many of her friends within the UMC and other organizations of which she has been a part. (Moderators - please let me know if this isn't acceptable.) That note is below:

Quote:
I pray all is well with you. I am emailing in hope that you will help the Church Within A Church Movement which is so deeply involved in BEing the fully inclusive church. Last year when the door closed for me in the UMC, another opened wide, not just to accept me, but to bless and cherish God's call to me for service in ministry. This movement needs financial and membership support right now to continue. You have been instrumental as an agent of change within the church, living to overcome frustrations that have hurt so many. I am asking that you include the CWAC movement in your efforts.

My personal interest is in the possibility of ordination into church leadership, as well as my developing curriculum and worship resources with the progressive, justice-seeking 'body of Christ'. You can get a look at what CWAC is about on our website: www.cwac.us and I would be glad to answer any questions. Our budget for administration along with planning and development for this fledgling group has hit a crisis point. In order to continue we simply must connect with people who share in the vision of a fully inclusive church living into a post-patriarchal time. To be it we have to live it and, as you know, that takes dedicated prayer, time and money by the grace of God.

To join us you can visit www.cwac.us and offer time and/or financial support. $100, $50, $35, every contribution matters. The CWAC Movement is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation and contributions are tax deductible. You can give by filling out the support form on line or by sending a contribution to: Church Within A Church Movement, PO Box 578524, Chicago, IL, 60657-8524

Remember, whatever you do does matter - especially prayer. I am thankful that you and I have been companions on the way, 'doing' a new thing toward becoming a more inclusive and justice-seeking church. Talk with you soon. Take care.

Grace and peace,
Jenna
Since SF'ers are also friends involved in this pursuit, I offered to post this here.

I had never heard of this Andy. Thank you for letting us know.

I will be checking out the website momentarily. It sounds fresh, and hopeful for those that need the hope. I hope that many hear the call.
