Default Next stop: Justice of the Peace

i'm disregarding the media hoopla over yesterday's ruling by the CA Supremes in favor of a more personal "whoo-hoo!" This morning my beloved partner Wes asked me to marry him and i accepted his proposal. So sometime this summer, on one of our regular visits to CA to see family, we'll be getting hitched.

i look forward to being able to use the Shug Avery line from The Color Purple - "I'se married now!"

Pax,
scott

*does a booty dance*

I was being kind of obnoxious about it at work this morning, actually. I made a couple (two men) smile and wink at me, and a couple of very vocal anti-gay coworkers glare at me. *shrug* It was fun.

NMWolfboy,
Congratulations! So you can be from another state and go to California to get married? Wow, not even Massachusetts does that. You have to live there to get married there.

technically, you have to live there one of the hotels told us that we could get married there and just write down the address of the hotel.....I guess a lot of people do that.

Thanks Keltic. Are you and Scott going to California to get married or just stay there in PA?

I see this as a turning point, guys, it could be the "political" tsunami we have been waiting for. It is now closing in on Middle America. We have Hawaii with domestic partnerships mostly equivalent to full marriage, Oregon, now California with it on the horizon as soon as the judges' opinions are filed. And then on the East coast, Massachusetts, with full marriage, Vermont, New Hampshire and New Jersey with civil unions. It might be years for Texas, but the tide is turning...

Let's hope that if Obama wins the election, this will happen sooner...
Or Hillary....

What Wes & i understand is that so long as your state of residence doesn't explicitly bar same sex marriage, then you can be married in CA. Since we live in New Mexico, which hasn't passed a DOMA, we can get married there. At least that's what a lawyer friend told us. If that's not the case, we'll just use his mother's address in Los Angeles.

Thanks for the well-wishes.

Pax,

scott

As you know, Texas DOES have a ban on same sex marriage, so I guess my wife and I could use our hotel address like Keltic suggested... Anyway, I hope there is such a furor in every county clerk's office in California trying to get all the certificates printed that will accommodate gay people applying to get married...it ought to be good for state business, y'know?

I wish I lived in New Mexico....I love that place...I remember spending two summers out there near Santa Fe and waking up in the chilly morning and looking at the blue, snow capped Sangre de Cristo mountains...Ahhh, pardon my trip down memory lane...It was a captivating experience...

Any way you could arrange to move there? There might be schools looking for teachers. What does your wife do? Can she find an opening in NM. Maybe in the vicinity of Albuquerque? I dunno.

Maybe it can really happen, PNG. Why not at least see what it would take, changes-wise, to get moved there.

Saw this when it happened (or a day later maybe?)... I'm very happy to see this!

I truly wish I could Zerb. My wife could work anywhere she wanted if her company has an office there, or is planning to open one soon. For now, though, she is possibly going to have a position open for her in Austin, TX, which is another place I would love to live. I used to visit my grandmother, who lived there, in the summer when I was a little girl and fell in love with the place. So...at least Austin is more gay friendly....Maybe someday Santa Fe, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Starts singing, "A wish is a dream your heart makes...." (from Cinderella, I think)..............

Does this mean that gays and lesbians can get married now in California? Or is it something that's going to go to a vote?

If memory serves, the ruling goes into effect 30 days after its publication. Don't know exactly when that is.

Default Yeah Wolfboy!

Congrats, way to go. Let's overwhelm the opposition into a state of indifference (for starters). Most of the comments I've read on this issue have been positive, although there are always the same old negatives.

I'm trying to talk my girlfriend into getting married, while the gettin' is good.
