Thumbs up Notes from the Anti-Heterosexism Conference

Hi all,

My husband and I were so happy to attend this event - it helped restore my faith which had been shaken by the heartlessness of some Christians toward GLBT people. I've just finished posting my notes from the conference at my blog, Reiter's Block, in case anyone who wasn't able to attend would like to see a summary of the presentations:

Thumbs up These are excellent notes, JB.

I also want to mention that the videos of the keynote speakers are now up.

I felt that “Genocidal Intentions” was the most moving speech I heard. As you put it:
Quote:
Next, Prof. Christine Robinson, a sociology professor at James Madison University in Virginia, presented an excellent paper on "Genocidal Intentions: Public Policy and the Ex-Gay Movement". She convinced me that the word "genocide" was not hyperbole. According to the UN Convention on Genocide, the term applies to a variety of strategies intended to wipe out an identifiable social subgroup. In addition to outright killing, genocide includes:

*Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
*Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
*Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
*Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
As far as I recall, she said she would be publishing this January, but I don't see it on her list of recent publications. I'll definitely be checking back though.

The Anti-Heterosexism Conference is an excellent idea whose time has come. I hope that the conference considers critical thinking in its criteria.

Definition of critical thinking:

Critical thinking calls for a persistent effort to examine any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the evidence that supports it. Critical thinking is important, because it enables one to analyze, evaluate, explain, and restructure our thinking, decreasing thereby the risk of adopting, acting on, or thinking with, a false belief.

For example: the belief that same-sex marriage will destroy all marriage. Critical thinking analyzes this belief for evidence to support it or lack of evidence that finds it to be false.
