Just 'cuz it's been bothering me a little bit.

A few of us have been guilty of that.

None of this - ...

I assumed that the mistake was 'Ghandi' because I used to do that all the time. In fact, I still might sometimes... but thanks to this I'll probably remember to correct myself next time.

I do the same thing with Buddha by putting the h in the wrong place. Thank goodness the H in Jesus H Christ is optional.

If I were to type about Gandhi, I'm 90% sure I'd have done the same thing.

Only Mary called him that, and only when he was in trouble.

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have posted that. Don't want anyone to feel bad.

It's just, yeah, the H goes after the D.

Gandhi.

I hope so. At least they're being heard.

You know...I think we need to make a bulletin about activist judges and interracial marriage. That -is- how the right to marry was given to colored people. If it had been put to a vote, blacks and whites would probably still be unable to marry. Do you think that will shut the fundies up, or just get them cranky?

Another guilty speller ... I checked because you got me wondering. And now, with the attention you gave to this, I bet I never misspell "Gandhi" again!

Hey Zerb,
I tend to be a Spelling Nazi at times too! My school ordered several big banners with motivational sayings from famous people such as Wayne Gretzky, MLK,Jr, Gandhi, etc. The saying from Wayne Gretzky said, "You miss 100 percent of the shots you dont' take." That one word made me nearly go crazy. I pointed it out several times and begged them to take it down because it was just wrong to leave it up with the apostrophe in the wrong place! The damn thing stayed up for almost two years until this year at our beginning of the year inservice, we were asked to say what our biggest pet peeves were. Of course, I said, "The Wayne Gretzky banner." They all said, "What's wrong with it?" I said, "The apostrophe is in the wrong place in the word 'dont'. " Hours later, it was down.

Another time I was in a restaurant and on the menu was a wine list. Chardonnay was spelled Chardonay. I called the waitress over and asked her who proofread the menu. She said the owner had done it and approved it. So she went to go get the manager. I showed him and he said, "We didn't know anything was wrong!" After he left, I found 38 more errors and left it on the table.

I know it sounds a little OCD, but to me it is unconscionable to misspell things, have it proofread and approve it then pay thousands of dollars on advertizing with things that are not grammatically correct. Even more wrong is to put this stuff up in schools for everyone to see.

Just my two cents, but don't feel alone. I am right there with you.

The misspelling of Gandhi always grates on my nerves, too.

You're an English teacher. It's occupational for you.

Not to mention, it is unacceptable for a school to publicly display a banner with such a glaring grammatical error on it.

In ordinary conversation (and this forum qualifies,) it doesn't matter if things are misspelled because it's the communication that's important. As long as we can understand each other! This is a casual context. But since Gandhi is talked about here so often, I finally caved to my constant urge to be a nag and correct people.

Your comment about the school posting a banner with such a foolish error on it reminded me of when I was in high school. Colleges/universities had my name/address, and every day for 2 years, my mailbox was stuffed with recruitment literature.

My filing system? ANY university or college that sent me recruitment materials with spelling or grammatical errors IN THE COVER LETTER got filed in the trash bin. The sad part? There were so MANY schools with that problem in their cover letters, and therefore, in the trash.

** I know that according to the grammatical structure I used above, the schools were in the trash. It's late and I don't feel like bothering to re-phrase it. Y'all know what I really mean.

There is a somewhat famous and popular restaurant in our area called Club Pheasant. EVERYONE calls is The Pheasant Club. I cannot help myself but correct folks on that one. For some reason, it irritates me just a bit.

Also, nearly everyone wants to spell my name "Tony" and not "Toni", and I'm often called "Terry" instead of my actual name, even by people who know me well. That doesn't bother me at all...just don't call me 'later for dinner'.

Default Thomas Jefferson once said

That he had no respect for any man who only knew one way to spell a word. Well, at least some of us are illustrious company.

My own personal shortcomings have to do with names and faces. I'm sure that I set occasional records in that department. .

Peace and Love, Bruce Chris

One day driving down the seawall in Galveston, I noticed a billboard sign that said, "Condo's for sale" I screeched my brakes and went inside and said, "What do your condos own?" They looked puzzled and I said, "Your sign says 'Condo's for sale' " They didn't know that condos was plural not possessive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is another thing that grates on my nerves. People confusing possessives with plurals.

I don't know, maybe I am just a little to anal about this.

(I too am bothered when plurals are confused with possessive. But ya know what? Speaking of possessive, sometimes I fall into the trap of "its" versus "it's." That's a strange one. I often have to stop and think about which way it should be.)
