As someone who loves literature and reading, I thought a thread for sharing book titles would be in order. So, recommend any glbt-themed books and novels? Short stories? Poetry? Plays? Authors? I wanna know! Non-fiction okay, too.

I am an avid reader also. I am a transgender individual and have a number of books about being trans. I have listed a couple I recommend and will add more in the future.

Transgender History-Susan Stryker- most comprehensive book I've read about our history.

I am an avid reader of lesbian fiction-I wouldn't necessarily call it "literature" but they are fascinating and great books. My wife says it's soft core porn, and I heartily disagree. They do have intricate plots and thrilling story lines, and it has sex scenes as do most books of this genre. My favorite author is Radclyffe. Her books are written from the perspective of who she is-a retired surgeon, who is into martial arts, and has some military experience, I believe. Nevertheless, she is a fantastic writer. I enjoy wrapping myself up in her books, as well as other authors' books too. It is a nice escape from reality for a little while.

Or the "Sword and Sorceress" short story series, I think there were 15 or more, edited by Marrion Zimmer Bradley. I think they have a flavor very much like Xena had. Two heroic women, against the world.

I can't think of any books, but Angels in America is a beautiful play that is wonderful to read and astounding to see. There is an HBO movie special based on the play, but it is nowhere near as good as seeing it performed.

Also, another good video to watch is Paris is Burning: a very insightful documentary.

Making Gay History - my favorite book to date, very informative, timely and easy to read.

Currently reading The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama, not gay but excellent read and including here because it gives me even more hope that he will fight for equal rights at the federal level (as well as repealing DOMA and DADT).

On my 'next read' list is Why Marriage Matters (don't know author at this point), about why we GLBT must fight for marriage equality and not settle for something different.

Something fun I enjoy now and then: going through "When I Knew". It's purely recreational and somewhat therapeutic! We all have that story!

I got a great book of short stories a few weeks ago. From Boys to Men: Gay Men Write About Growing Up has NO COMING OUT STORIES, instead looking at what it was like to be different in such a specific way. Pretty interesting stuff, some from before they figured it out, some after, and others during the process.

I was honestly surprised to see references to defense mechanisms I thought I'd invented when I was nine. Seriously, at least twice my jaw dropped and I said "NO WAY!" to an empty room.

Ooh! I'm psyched now! I just gave Audacity to hubby for his birthday. It looks like I may start reading it before he even gets around to it. Your comment has me totally jazzed about reading it, now. Thanks, T!

Will have to get back to this thread after I've glanced at the bookshelf. But one thing off the top of the head is an older book that I continually recommend as I find the logical description of the workings of oppression and the nature of the problem to be absolutely excellent. That book is Created Equal: why gay rights matter to America.
Get a copy and read it. It's one of the best books I've ever read about homophobia and how it harms our society. An excellent sociological analysis, imnsho.

Yes, Obama's book is a MUST READ. At least I am filled with extreme hope every time I open the book and start to read.

I remember you mentioning that one before Zerbie and thinking I must get it. I ended up with Why Marriage Matters so now I'll keep my eye out on that one too. I'm getting quite the 'gay' library built up, and I LOVE it! I just love books!

Mercedes Lackey is wonderful!!! Her book, Magic's Pawn, is one of the few novels I have ever cried over. It really hit me hard when Vanyel lost his boyfriend. I was mad and threw the book. BTW, I love the relationship of Kethry and Tarma in the Oathblood series. They are truly committed to one another.
