I've got doubts sister, I've got Doubts. That's the last line I remeber of doubt and I felt it was the perfect place to leave the Angelica movie theater. Suspended in in a web of emotions, not about the despicable priest(whom I was convinced had committed unthinkable crimes) but about the future of the son, father and Holey Ghost.
The one who is the glue became unstuck, shaken in faith. My friend was disappointed. He wanted to know the outcome, the result, the verdict. Was the priest guilty of being a a pedophile? How do you feel about this movie? |

Really? You thought he did? I think he didn't. In fact (borrowing from my priest here), I think he left not because he had done something wrong, but because he knew that if he stayed, he would hurt the boy. The priest was gay, and I think he was okay with that. I think he knew that the boy was also gay, knew that the boy needed to stay there and be protected, and that doubts would escalate into something more. As the boy's mother said, He'll be the one to be blamed, not the priest.
Why do I think the priest was not guilty? He didn't have the proper attitude to be a pedophile in my mind, not enough remorse/self-disdain. I think he had confessed his homosexuality in a previous parish and moved on because of it. His sermons were too powerfully accepting (tolerance, gossip, etc.) to come from a pedophile in my mind. But perhaps I simply want to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Haven't seen it yet, but Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of my favorite actors. I want to see this one as soon as it's out on DVD.
