What motivates you in life? In specific tasks, etc.
How important do you think it is to have a motivation? Can you accomplish anything great without a motivation? Can you accomplish anything at all? I have been think about these questions a lot lately, because I don't feel like I am very motivated. I'm hoping to get my motivation back, because without I'm not getting much done. Please, share your thoughts, any and all of them!

I like the feeling of being part of something bigger than myself. For some people, it means belonging to a church or other religious group. It can also mean working with a charitable, social or political cause. My thing is being active in a political party.
I've been an active member of the New Democratic Party (NDP) (in Canada) for many years. This June will be my 30th anniversary there. I have a number of reasons for sticking around. It's fun and most of my friends are NDP supporters. It's given my self-esteem some much-needed boosts. (I was a nerdy kid who didn't fit in anywhere and wasn't particularly good at anything.) I know I'm never going to be a campaign manager or party vice-president, but by doing a lot of "gopher" work, I've managed to create a nice little niche for myself. I've been a constituency association secretary for a few years now. I believe in the motto "What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all", and the Steve Earle maxim "If you don't vote, don't bitch." I'm not a mover and shaker, but I do my little part in election campaigns, etc. by answering phones, dropping leaflets, doing data entry, stuffing envelopes and typing meeting minutes. This is what keeps me sane and gives me purpose. Hope this helps. Last edited by offog; 05-01-2009 at 06:31 PM. |

I'm glad to be of help.
That quote is from J.S. Woodsworth, who was a Member of Parliament during the 1930s. He was one of those eeevil Canadian socialists. |

Being motivated by being part of something bigger. I think that is probably true for a lot of us.
I found that I am far more motivated in general, when I participate on these forums. Why? Because I feel like I'm part of something bigger. I am also motivated by the possibility of travel. My mom is considering finally sending us down to CA, while I'm not yet convinced it will happen, the idea got me motivated. Finally, this reminded me of a 'game' Nate introduced me too. Basically, you create a list of all the things you want to get done that week, or in a certain period of time. You keep it reasonable and you put ideal completion dates on it. All the while, you have the ultimate goal posted on the top of the page, I think that part was called 'empowering context': something such as, 'by doing this, I am helping to make my community a better place.' This reminds you everyday, to look at the bigger picture, because everything little thing you do really is a small part of something great. I apologize, trying to explain the 'game' is kind of hard, if this is of interest can post an example or at least try to explain it better.

Simply put, anything God calls me to do. I may not always want to do it, but I feel pretty good if I feel I've benefited someone else.
