As I write this, I find my hands shaking in anger, as I received this letter from Rev. John Dear, a Jesuit priest who has spent his entire priestly vocation commited to nonviolence. At the same time, we here in the Oakland diocese hear that Bp. Cummings pleaded for years to have a confessed pedophile laicized. The Archbishop of N.M removed John's faculties because of his position on nuclear weapons! Do any of these bishops and cardinals have any idea who it is they are supposed to be serving! This is totally insane. Kara

It's almost enough to make you become episcopalian.
They are so concerned about keeping the laity happy in Los Alamos yet refuse to defend children from bad priests. Where's the justice in that? Isn't the Vatican generally against nuclear weapons? Perhaps somebody should write to the Vatican about all this. Isn't mass destruction of human life covered under "Thou shalt not kill"?

Wow. This is sad. Obviously, the Archbishop of NM isn't familiar with the Beatitudes. Must have missed that lecture in seminary.
Reminds me of a bumper sticker: Who would Jesus bomb?

I asked the question "Who is financing Armageddon?" another place on the web. I know my answer. Who is least likely to be willing to beat their swords into plowshares and pruning hooks?

Sad indeed. But it also reminds me that the Church can be reflective of the dominant culture, and not in its most flattering aspects. However, if we had our own Chernobyl we might think differently. I haven't forgotten that, and wonder why others have. It isn't ancient history after all.
Out of sight, out of mind? Now there's a pun.
