It's a bitch to sing! So I have heard from colleagues at the Met and City Opera. One spends the night counting, counting, counting the number of times one repeats a certain motive before changing it slightly and then counting some more. And so forth. Aida it ain't!
At the Met there is a prompter, but at City Opera? You are on your own! No net! It's hypnotic for the listener perhaps, but not for those on stage.
