Glass's "Satyagraha"
Today in 1980, "Satyagraha," a new opera by the American composer Philip Glass had its premiere in Rotterdam by the Netherlands Opera.
Four years earlier, in 1976, Glass's first big opera, "Einstein on the Beach," had scored a big hit not only in Avignon, France, where it had premiered, but also at a special, non-subscription performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Oh darn, I thought we were all getting hired to sing in a new opera.


The MET did this just last year - it was on broadcast. I only heard some of it, so can't really comment on what it was like.

It's a bitch to sing! So I have heard from colleagues at the Met and City Opera. One spends the night counting, counting, counting the number of times one repeats a certain motive before changing it slightly and then counting some more. And so forth. Aida it ain't!

At the Met there is a prompter, but at City Opera? You are on your own! No net!

It's hypnotic for the listener perhaps, but not for those on stage.
