I am Julie, friend and adovate...
My son, Luke, and I went on an action with Soulforce in North Dakota on April 23, 2007. We spent two days with dedicated activists, reaching out to students who are not free to speak for themselves, taking meaningful action and communicating with communities and the media.
This remains one of the most meaningful actions of my 50-year life. My grey T-shirt with the big fat orange Q has given me many opportunities to share my experience with others... and to enlighten more than a few people. I'm in graduate school now in North Carolina, spreading the word about Soulforce. I have an awesome assistantship positions as the Advocate for Social Justice in the Office of Multicultural Affairs. This gives me an awesome place to work from and people with whome I can share information of Soulforce's work. My son, Luke, is still in High School and only 17, but he is considering joining the equality ride in 2011 as an ally/advocate/activist. We just wanted folks to know that we are still here, still speaking, still working -- sometimes just one person at a time. We are proud to be considered part of the group. We'll be watching to see where the 2011 actions will take place, and hope to meet up with you someplace soon. (North Carolina?) It'd be an honor to go to jail with you! ~ julie
