The "Queen of Gospel Music" Albertina Walker Has Died
BY LUKE FUNK MYFOXNY.COM - Gospel music legend Albertina Walker has died at the age of 81. According to her publicist, the Gospel legend died Friday morning at 4:30 a.m. Walker is known as the Queen of Gospel Music. She recorded more than 60 albums in her 60 year career. Walker was born in Chicago in 1929. She started to sing for the children's choir of the West Point Baptist Church In Chicago when she was just 4-years-old. Walker founded the Caravans. It helped launched the careers of Pastor Shirley Caesar, Inez Andrews, Delores Washington, Cassietta George, Evangelist Dorothy Norwood and Reverend James Cleveland. Walker became a successful solo artist in 1975. Some of her popular songs are "Please Be Patient With Me", "Lord Keep Me Day By Day", "I'm Still Here", "Lord Remember Me", and "Walk Around Heaven". Walker has performed for Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton. She also performed for South African President Nelson Mandela. She also appeared in the Steve Martin movie "Leap of Faith."
