The key problem with almost every adult friendship I’ve known is the same, and as one would imagine, it is rooted as much in who I am as it is in the people I choose to befriend.

I’m just not a fun person.

I need help...strength...grace...all the stuff I’m not gonna get from the Church.
Not a fun person? Somehow I can't imagine that. The new pic says something else entirely you know..... And not get strength or grace from the church? Maybe....maybe not...I cannot say. (I actually think this kind of things comes from within.....but I don't need to tell you what you already know) But I know the spirit of friendship lies within you, deep, calm and still- from a well-spring full and limitless.

Maybe it's just plain silliness- I'm working out my own anger I suppose- but in a fit of lateral thinking- I started to think about a Judy Garland song. Maybe it will knock some of the blues away. Wanna sing along? You take a part...I'll take the other. Wanna be Judy? Meet you at the end! Go!

(It's Gay Pride Month...everyone sing along!)

Judy: If you're ever in a jam, here I am
Johnny: If you're ever in a mess, S.O.S.

Judy: If you ever feel so happy you land in jail, I'm your bail
Both: It's friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgot
Ours will still be hot
Judy: A-lottle-dottle-dottle-dig-dig-dig
Johnny: If you're ever down a well, ring my bell
Judy: And if you're ever up a tree just phone to me
Johnny: A-yes-sir-ee
If you ever lose your teeth and you're out to dine, borrow mine
Both: It's friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgate
Johnny: Gate?
Both: Ours will still be great
Johnny: A-lottle-dottle-dottle-chuck-chuck-chuck
Judy: If they ever black your eyes, put me wise
Johnny: If they ever cook your goose, turn me loose
Judy: And if they ever put a bullet through your brain, I'll complain
Both: It's friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgit
Ours will still be it
Judy: A-lottle-dottle-dottle-hep-hep-hep
Johnny: If you ever lose your mind, I'll be kind
Judy: And if you ever lose your shirt, I'll be hurt
Johnny: If you're ever in a mill and get sawed in half, I won't laugh
Both: It's friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships are up the crick
Ours will still be slick

A-lottle-dottle-dottle-woof-woof-woof
hep-hep-hep
a-chuck-chuck-chuck
a-dig-dig-dig
Good evening friends!

Thanks all for your kind thoughts. Actually (hahah) almost immediately after I had posted this morning, one of my AWOL compatriots sent me an email. Feeling better.

Yeah...the point is I love the Church (speaking more of the big overall concept...not just Episcopal) but sometimes it's a terrible friend to the people it's supposed to BE. Sigh... It's such a sad irony to me that the institution that should be--or could be--the instrument of God's grace in the world...the embodiment of the divine arms gathering all together into one happy flock...is often void of grace for the marginalized. The poor, the dirty, the sinners, the gays, the depressed, the unwed, the homeless, the addicted, the diseased...all outcasts are chased away by the same rod and staff that should be comforting them.

Sigh...

So the Church ain't got no grace for me.

It ain't no family to me.

No friend.

No love.

Well...I guess ya'll an' me...we gotta be a better Church than the one that ain't to us. Maybe we gotta be a Church to it too.

And Daniel...I like this song better. :-) from the album "Highlights From Just For The Record" a 1963 broadcast recording of Judy Garland and Barbara Streisand singing a duet of "Get Happy" and "Happy Days Are Here Again." They sing the lines of verse on top of each other...ingenious!!!

Judy, Barb, Both

Forget your troubles c'mon get happy, Happy days are here again
you better chase all your cares away. The skies above are clear again
Shout hallejulah c'mon get happy So lets sing a song of cheer again
get ready for the judgement day. Happy days are here again

the sun is shinin c'mon get happy, Altogether shout it now
the lord is waitin to take your hand. Theres no one who can doubt it now
shout hallejulah c'mon get happy, So lets tell the world about it now
we're going to the promise land Happy days are here again

We're headin across the river
Soon your cares will all be gone. There'll be no more from now on

From now on...

Forget your troubles c'mon get happy, Happy days are here again
you better chase all your cares away. The skies above are here again
shout hallejulah c'mon get happy, So, lets sing a song of cheer again
Happy times
Happy times
Happy nights
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

Can't do any better than that! Great singing. Great artists. Barbra holds her own against one who is, perhaps, the greates singer in living memory. She called forth the soul of everyone she sang to.
