New Jersey
Morningrob, hello !
I believe that the NJ decision will occur soon, or by your Labour Day, when the election season heats up for the biennial congressional elections.
NJ has always had a strong liberal to moderate Republican gubernatorial reality, especially after Democratic gubernatorial scandals. Witness our new gay poster boy who in the closet denied freedom for "his" community while still in office. Governor, and former US Senator Corzine, a Wall Street multimillionaire Democrat, is not too popular with NJ at the moment - especially with Wall Street gamblers and legislative Democrats.
Strange state laws. If you are same-sex partnered - as legal strangers since the law doesn't recognise your relationship - you can successfully petition to both adopt a child, or children. You can have a dual parent adoption, but cannot get married.
NJ's highest court are probably reading the NY highest court decision. If MA puts the marriage law to a popular referendum this week and if the judiciary votes for some equality, I would wager ( not in Atlantic City) that they will give the legislature six or more months to play the MA game, and absolve them.
This is what happens when your enemies hate you, and your allies merely tolerate you - until they find it politically liable to do so.
