Default Crazy Idea? Library Initiative

Hi everyone,
I have a crazy idea and wondering what y'all think about it. Generally, libraries are the centers of information and knowledge in a community, and liberal in the political sense. For example, librarians nationally are fighting against the Patriot Act on many fronts due to its unconstitutional element against basic civil rights (i.e. free speech). Overall, most libraries, too, are friendly, if not apart of, the LGBT community. However, there are exceptions (as I faced when coming out) in small communities.

Anyway, the proposed initiative: buy, donate, sell, or market Soulforce & LGBT media (books, dvd, and pamphlets) to local academic and public libraries. Knowledge is power, and the more the public encounters Soulforce media - perhaps they will become more aware and more helpful in the struggle for LGBT equality. Thanks and peace and blessings to everyone.

I believe that if the SF materials were available to be stumbled upon in public libraries it could bring a great deal of relief and solace to those who are young and/or questioning if they stuumbled on to it. Of course, it might be an interesting battle trying to get/keep the materials available in some districts, but that in itself is one that's already going on anyway, so why not try?

I think it's a good idea to look into donating SF videos and pamphlets to public libraries. It could save someone's sanity.

Zerbie, thank you and agreed. ALA guidelines stress diversity in information so hopefully it wouldn't be a major problem in most libraries.

I think it's a fine idea.

I'm sure some libraries would be more challenging than others, largely depending on how many militant heterosexist fundies are around them. But people in those environments probably need it most.

Thanks for the responses!

Schoolboi: I've been doing the same, and when Fall starts; I hope to donate more.

Thanks again everyone and lets keep up the good work! :-)

Wink We seem to have a lot of that here

From what I can see, a high percentage of the people who work at our local library system seem to be friends of Dorothy. They have a lot of books on all aspects of sexuality, and during Gay Pride month, the LGBT ones are prominently placed out on the display stands. Like I keep tellin' ya, this is Minneapolis, and we seem to have more liberals, GLBT folk, and Blue Staters NOS per capita than almost anywhere.

Peace and Love, BruceChris

P.S.: Also a fair number of private, gay focus libraries.
