Should I be outraged?

Hey all--I read this article yesterday, and felt both angry and supportive of this program. Take a look. It's interesting.

I read it and always find myself getting a bit angry at stereotypes and such and at people who tend to see no controversy at all in programs like this. I don't recall the article saying that this was part of the faith based initiatives, but it sure sounded like it.
Also, I don't really mind too much that my tax dollars go to helping straight people have better marriages, but it would be nice if it could go equally to glbt's having better marriages, and there is the injustice.

If people really do not want us to be living in sin, and they are in favor of stable families, how could they POSSIBLY be opposed to Equal Marriage?

(edit) But hey, at least/at last somebody has passed something that you could call an actual "Defense of Marriage" act.

I would be all for helping couples know how to cope better with life's struggles, gay and straight couples. And, for fathers that tend to be less involved to learn more about the commitments of fatherhood. But, to generalize the problems of financial stress in a marriage and child abuse and Hollywood prostitution on poverty-stricken Americans I feel is very biased. It is so much easier in this country, I think, and in the world, to marginalize groups of people if we are effective in grouping them together as a whole in the first place, instead of realizing how much damage we do in the process. I am outraged, discouraged, embarassed that our country feels that this is dollars that are being spent for the right goal, and targeting whom they should. It really reminds me of Vegas and the homeless people (see Dirty people thread). People want to address the problem, but the approach is lopsided and loaded with stereotypical beliefs.

Can homosexuals opt not to pay any of the taxes that will fund this program? After all, if we can't take advantage of marriage, why should we pay? The answer will be undoubtedly "no".

I think we could pay for it by fining spouses $5000 total when they file for divorce ($2500 each). That would help defend marriage against those who truly threaten it and would pay for the program with interest to spare.

Now that is a good idea! As far as opting out of a tax that doesn't benefit us, that sounds like a potential nation-wide petition to me...maybe we can start one (?)
