People today typically come into a new community from many different cultures and experiences and have their own personalities and needs. These differences are a gift in different styles of relating and decision-making appropriate to various circumstances. However, when these differences are ignored under the control and influence of a majority, the decision-making process and community can become exclusive. Mutual invitation is a process for sharing in discussion which assures that everyone who wants to speak will have an opportunity in a safe and respectful manner no matter what cultural or personal style she or he prefers or is accustomed to using. In this way we can be intentional that the community we now form for this work is as inclusive and respectful as we can make it.
This guide can be used to guide you and your group through respectful, productive dialogue.
