This four part outline describes a self-administered training in nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience.

“Introduction to Nonviolence” — An introduction to key terms used by Gandhi and the “Soul Force” eight-step process of nonviolence.

“Introduction to Action Planning” — An introduction to basic theory of organizing nonviolent direct action as presented in the Ruckus Action Planning Manual, including sections covering the Functions of a Direct Action, the Symbolic Nature of a Direct Action, and Action Development. This section concludes with a link to noted theorist Gene Sharp’s 198 Methods of Nonviolent Direct Action.

“NVCD Planning Tools” — Includes a wealth of planning tools encompassing key functional areas in planning a nonviolent direct action:

“The Pledge to Nonviolence (.PDF) — Historically, there have been a variety of iterations of Gandhi’s original pledge to nonviolence. Additionally, some groups opt to use “affirmations” because the term “pledge” runs contrary to deeply held religious beliefs of many nonviolent adherents.
