Communications Herald

Soulforce is a 23-year-old national nonprofit that works to end the religious and political oppression of LGBTQI people by decloaking the ideologies of Christian Supremacy and healing our communities’ spirits from weaponized religion. We build radical analysis, political education, and spiritual power for activists across all social justice movements wherever the work is threatened by Christian fundamentalism.

 

We are seeking a full time (35 hours/week) Communications Herald who will carry out our digital communications strategy and support our digital community building.

 

Key functions of this position:

  • Day-to-day connection with our communities on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter

  • Implementing our communications strategy with various messaging for a wide range of audiences:

    • Queer and Trans people in the US South or Global South seeking healing from religion-based trauma;

    • Queer and Trans activists/organizers in the US South or Global South who are involved in progressive/radical political activity;

    • Organizations, faith communities, institutions, and other groups in hostile Christian contexts who are interested in partnering with Soulforce to further their goals; and

    • Donors, funders, and other community stakeholders

  • Creating graphics and image descriptions for social media that communicate our mission, vision, politics, and approach.

  • Collaborating with our programs team to execute ideas for content and campaigns that amplify a diversity of programs and activities, including but not limited to: politicized theological resources, audiovisual projects, workshops and panels, program partnerships, and fundraising campaigns.

  • Collaborating with our programs team to identify and execute new ideas for content and campaigns that align with our overarching organizational goals.

  • Supporting the design and printing of kinship-building materials like stickers, postcards, etc.

  • Identifying and executing new opportunities for meeting our digital communications goals, including:

    • Building and maintaining contact/media lists

    • Identifying strategic relationships to build with key community members

    • Identifying and integrating new platforms to serve our internal teamwork

    • Support the development of an organization-wide voice guide and other strategic communications infrastructure

  • Updating copy and images on our website as needed (no coding experience required).

  • Other general communications support as needed.

 

This is a key behind-the-scenes position in Soulforce to move the work of sabotaging Christian Supremacy forward, so excellent communication, self-motivation, reliability, positivity, and being detail-oriented are a must.

  • You have experience with graphic design, specifically taking a concept and turning it into a graphic for social media or print materials. You have an eye for beauty.

  • You love making complex ideas accessible in words and visuals for many different kinds of people across different contexts and cultures.

  • You have experience in community organizing (digital or on-the-ground).

  • You have experience managing social media and running digital campaigns.

  • You appreciate the existing visual brand of our digital communications, and would enjoy learning how to replicate and grow that brand.

  • You tend to take initiative once you’ve learned a skill, and would describe yourself as self-motivated.

  • You are technologically savvy, and when you encounter challenges in the digital realm you feel comfortable researching solutions and asking for help as needed.

  • You enjoy learning new things, and you take feedback well as a learner.

  • You pay great attention to detail, and appreciate working with others who are highly detail oriented. 

  • You are optimistic and solutions-oriented, and you flourish in teams that share this positive orientation. You take direction and incorporate feedback well.

  • You enjoy experimenting with solutions to the unique and complex challenges that come with innovative work, and aren’t easily deterred by obstacles in the way of a goal.

 

Special consideration will be given to candidates who are: 

  • Fluent in English and Spanish.

  • Connected and committed to communities in the US South and/or Global South.

  • Based in the Triangle or Asheville area of North Carolina for the possibility of in-person co-working.

  • Experienced in social media management.

  • Experienced in any of our existing tools for digital communications: Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, Hootsuite, Constant Contact, Wordpress, Google Drive applications, and Podbean.

 

Location: We are a decentralized organization based in the United States, with staff members collaborating virtually from different locations. Occasional overnight travel may be required once Soulforce resumes on-the-ground programming.

 

Reports to: The Co-Executive Directors


Compensation: $40,000 salary. Soulforce offers a range of additional benefits, including: semi-flexible work schedule/location, paid time off, health insurance stipend, work from home benefit, paid new parental leave (after 18 months), and paid sabbatical (after 48 months)
