NCAA: Help Our Schools

Soulforce and Campus Pride are working together to ask the NCAA to support LGBTQI students on Christian campuses. We are are excited about continually providing NCAA action kits to students who are interested in joining the movement and organizing with us.

Title IX is a federal law that states:

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

57 religious based colleges have since applied for exemptions under the new extended Title IX provisions extending to protect students regardless of gender identity or “failure to conform to stereotypical notions of masculinity or femininity”.

This means student athletes can have their scholarships taken away or be kicked off a team for merely being LGBTQ and violating their universities’ religious policies.

It also means transgender students can be denied the appropriate access to male/female leagues, locker rooms, facilities etc.

The NCAA states on their website, “Diversity and inclusion improve the learning environment for all student-athletes and enhance excellence within the Association.”

That’s why we are asking the NCAA to divest from all religious based campuses who have requested discriminatory Title IX waivers toward LGBTQ youth. Christian colleges and other institutions which routinely participate in multimillion-dollar bowl games have a long way to go in terms of race, gender, and ability equity.

Asking the NCAA, an organization which facilitates some of the most watched athletic programming, to make recommitment to Title IX in the midst of religious schools discriminating against LGBTQ youth is just one place we can start.
