Manifesto: Are You Our People?
There is something uniquely special about the people who assign themselves the tasks of Soulforce.
Folks often say to us, “This feels like church.” It is our response to spiritual violence, so our work acts as a particular kind of balm that reaches the hearts of our people. We know that how we do our work is every bit as important as the work products we create.
There is a boldness in the vulnerability of those who choose to do this work. It is hard, and game changing, and it doesn’t get done unless we commit ourselves to spiritual-political practices that rejuvenate our spirits as we rail against the systems of oppression that seek our peoples’ demise.
Recently in a staff meeting we took time to reflect on who we are as a clan of spirit-people organizing at the intersections of many identities and struggles. This is our collective truth on how we are able to carry our heavy loads while brandishing such fierce and open hearts together. This is who we are… are you our people?
We are of the spirit because we are of the body.
We see that activist work involves faith.
We believe you can’t have religion without a power analysis,
and you can’t get to Spirit without activism.
We are unapologetic about our truth, and honest about what we don’t know.
We are all-in and going all the way…together.
We are both militant and tender.
We do not compromise; we are critical and specific about what we are doing in the world.
We get giddy about this work; we get giddy about each other.
We are the sweetest terror.
We are incredibly brave.
We are pied pipers and star people.
We are honest with each other and with ourselves.
There is intimacy here infused with political trust.
There is an element of artistry in what we have and what we’re building.
We are artists. We do this because we have to, and we are creative in all things.
And even when we fuck up, we turn it into something else beautiful.
We are deeply called to this work, and it’s really, really hard.
We are heart-led; we lean in with our whole hearts and we get our shit done.
We are loyal to the work and to each other.
If this calls to you, Soulforce might be the place for you… welcome home.
