Soulforce Continues Training Holy Troublemakers

One of the taproots of Soulforce is training and accompanying folks who are dedicated to transforming the institutions that represent religion, in this case the United Methodist Church, in their work to reclaim spirit and do justice. Over three weekends in April, we provided a series of workshops in Nonviolence and Direct Actions in escalating levels of intensity in order to seed the ground at the upcoming United Methodist Church General Conference this May in Portland. First United Methodist Church hosted this city-wide invitational program.

“I am curious to learn more about the history of nonviolence. I also want to do more thinking about and meditation on my own motivations and how to cultivate humility.”

Soulforce works hard to couple the nuts and bolts of touch conversations and action planning with the behind-the-scenes “soul preparation” that involves singing, movement, and diving deep into our ethics and hearts. We are so grateful for the spiritual and political trust that these folks - a changing crowd of about 20 participants each Saturday - lent to the process. Going deep and building our physical practice of nonviolence from the roots of our principles and beliefs is the best way we know how to grow this particular kind of revolutionary work!

And at the same time, it’s vital that we be practical and urgent. General Conference is upon us, and the legislative matters (or lack thereof) that perpetuate harm - against People of Color, Working Class People, LGBTQI People, and future generations who are inheriting a world imperiled by climate change - require tactical efficiency and disciplined preparation.

“This is all new to me. I look forward to being educated, motivated, and moved into the word to make statements with purpose.”

Forty people are more prepared than ever to bring their spirits and politics to the work of making the bureaucracy of General Conference bend toward justice. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of your journey!
